Gail Richards is accompanying Ann Carrington who is visiting her father, Henry, at his spooky, old, country estate. It's been many years since she's seen him. They get a lift from Cosmo Topper, who lives in the neighborhood. Gail is murdered that night, and her spirit seeks out Topper to find out who killed her and why.

Delightful ghost story
Blondell is murdered but her ghost still roams the old mansion where she was killed. Cosmo Topper is recruited by her ghost to track down who killed her.
Roland Young is delightful acting with no one there. Good performances from the others as well.
The ending is a "surprise"...

A top quality film
The play was entertaining, moved well, and was fun to watch.
Billie Burke (who played Glinda, the Good Witch in the Wizard of OZ), plays the air-headed wife of Cosmo Topper (played by Roland Young), a mild mannered, apologetically polite man, who finds himself in a number of uncomfortable, inexplainable situations.
Joan Blondell plays the victim of this murder mystery, who has the temerity to refuse to play dead. Her spirit enlists the aid of and guides Cosmo, to ferret out why and by whom she was killed.
Eddie 'Rochester' Anderson's character wore a bit thin for me. The whole "I'm a Negro and I am scared of ghosts" gag, is a bit tiring. I prefer Mantan Moreland's "Birmingham Brown" portrayal of this stereotype, if it must be included in a play. He did have one great line about going back to work for Jack Benny.
Overall, a great mystery with a great cast and great direction.

Yes, a fun film.
All the folks in this do what they got paid for, they did a good job with this script.
I saw this in the theaters, and have watched it at least twenty or thirty times since then, I even shelled out the long green to by the set put out by Turner on DVD, well worth it. But download this from the nice folks at
Archive.org, and you will like it.
I have always liked Joan Blondell, and when you add all the others it is really fun.

Nice!
I downloaded this movie because I actually thought it'd be *boring* (just for the heck of it).
But I was wrong. It's a great film! Funny, too.
I liked most the scene in the freezer. I love that maid (Patsy Kelly).
If you liked this movie you may also like
The Gorilla (Patsy Kelly is there too, and the police officer acts somewhat similar to the detective there.)
